How to choose your toothpaste?

Toothpaste is one of those products that we all use daily, but we rarely stop to consider if we are really choosing the right one.

The truth is that there is no “universal” toothpaste; the best option depends on the age, habits, and needs of each patient.

1. What should not be missing in your toothpaste?

Without exception, we all need one key ingredient: fluoride.

This mineral helps prevent tooth decay by strengthening the enamel and making it more resistant to the acids produced by bacteria.

2. The right dose for each person

What varies is not the need for fluoride, but the concentration your toothpaste should have:

• Adults: the recommended minimum is 1,450 ppm of sodium fluoride.

• Children: 1,000 ppm is enough. However, the amount applied should be very small and always supervised by an adult.

3. Special factors to consider

There are situations where choosing the right toothpaste becomes even more important:

• Patients undergoing radiotherapy or chemotherapy, who may have a higher risk of cavities.

• Use of medications such as antidepressants or antiepileptics, which often reduce saliva.

• People with orthodontics, who need extra reinforcement in hygiene.

4. Practical tips when buying

✔️  Always check the label: make sure it states the fluoride concentration.

✔️  Choose a soft-bristled toothbrush and use a rice-sized amount of toothpaste for children, and a pea-sized amount for adults.

✔️  Don’t be guided only by flavor or advertising: what truly matters is the composition.

In summary:

The best toothpaste is the one that, in addition to leaving you with a fresh feeling, truly protects you against cavities with the right fluoride dose for you.

If you’re not sure which one to choose, ask at your next appointment! We’ll be happy to guide you.
